Teacher of History and Geography

James
NAUGHTON

Originally from Brooklyn, New York, and later Denver, Colorado, James has both a love of big cities and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He holds a BA in History and an MBA from the University of Colorado, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Education from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

James has extensive international teaching experience in Asia, having taught in Seoul, Nanjing, and Bangkok over the past quarter century. While in Nanjing, he taught IGCSE and IB Diploma History and Geography, and he continues to bring academic rigor, a global perspective, and enthusiasm into the classroom. He is especially passionate about teaching the humanities and helping students connect the past to the world around them. A firm believer in the importance of developing an internal locus of control, James encourages his students to take responsibility for their own learning and growth.

James is joined at BIST by his wife, Buatoom, who will be working as a Teaching Assistant, and their two children—Ripley, in Year 4, and Brendan, in Reception. The family is thrilled to explore Romania and Europe together and looking forward to a slew of new and worthwhile experiences. Outside the classroom, James enjoys hiking, camping, skiing, following sports, eating his wife’s cooking, and—most of all—being a dad.
